Opened in 2013 the Library of Birmingham is the largest public cultural space and regional library in Europe. In 2014 the library became the 10th most popular attraction in the UK with nearly 2.5 million visitors.
At the top of the library is the Shakespeare Memorial Room. Designed by John Henry Chamberlain in 1882 for Birmingham’s first library it was dismantled in 1974 and reassembled when Birmingham Central Library was built. It was once again moved to it’s current place in the gold tower at the top.
If you’re in Birmingham I highly recommend a visit. Walking through the building through the building to enjoy the unusual architecture, both on the inside and out. Highlights including the two outdoor spaces on the upper floors, the oval bookcases and the Shakespeare Memorial Room.
