Enabling a Chance for Something to Happen

I’m currently watching Abstract: The Art of Design on Netflix. It’s a wonderful insight into how the best designers create iconic work. Part of what makes it wonderful is sharing the struggle of design that we’ve all experienced.

Here is a quote from the first episode that features Illustrator Christoph Niemann.

So I think Chuck Close said, inspiration is for amateurs, us professionals, we just go to work in the morning.

The one thing I really love about that quote is it relieves you of a lot of pressure. It’s not about waiting for hours for this moment where inspiration strikes.

It’s just about showing up and getting started and then something amazing happens or it doesn’t happen. All that matters is you enabled a chance for something to happen.

Hide or Exclude Folders and Files From Search in Visual Studio Code

I love Visual Studio Code. I never thought I’d be saying that my favourite application was developed by Microsoft! One of it’s best features is the ability to customise almost anything using user settings.

Here is a a snippet that hides folders or excludes them from search. Handy for removing those core files that shouldn’t be edited anyway. It also helps with performance. These are mine for WordPress. Just add them to preferences > settings.

"files.exclude": {
    "*/**/node_modules/": true,
    "wp-includes/": true,
    "wp-admin/": true,
    //"wp-*.*": true,
    "wp-config.*": false,
    "xmlrpc.php": true,
    ".vscode/": true,
    "*/**/cache/": true,
    "*/**/uploads/": true,
    "*/**/infinitewp/": true,
    "*/**/.github/": true,
    //"*/**/build/": true
},
"search.exclude": {
    "build/": true,
},

Information Designer

I recently heard Paul Boag speak about information design. I’ve always struggled to apply a job title that accurately describes what I do. Information Designer is the closest yet.

The term has come to be used specifically for graphic design for displaying information effectively, rather than just attractively or for artistic expression.

Many of the ideas of information design align with my beliefs and thoughts into what makes a good website. Wikipedia has lots of information on the practice of information design.

Always Leave Things Cleaner Than You Found Them

Design and code can be a messy world. No one is to blame. Always make what you work on better.

Always leave the campground cleaner than you found it.

Logo Modernism (Design) — The Easy Way to Design Good Logos

In the eyes of a purist this might be cheating. If you’re about to design a logo buy this book!

Logo Modernism (Design) by Jens Muller, R. Roger Remington is around £30 on Amazon and contains hundreds of logos from the 60s, 70s and 80s. It’s huge! It’s around 450 pages and nearly A3 in size. It’s split into various categories such as single letters, multiple letters, typography and geometric.

It’s great starting point for a new project, especially if you design logos or icons. If you don’t, buy it anyway, it’s a fascinating book and definitely deserves a place on your coffee table.

The Simpler Way to Access Post Meta in WordPress

Access post meta the simple way. Forget trying to remember the complex get_post_meta() function, just use this instead:

$post->foo

Yup, it’s magic and I can’t believe I’ve just found out about it!
